"Some books masquerading as exam preparation books are in fact more generally focused coursebooks and sometimes quite interesting ones too. Colourful and well laid out...The colour coding is particularly good. 18 pages of grammar reference including exercises appear in the centre of the book together with four double page spreads for the four language skills containing guidance and exercises: good learner training material."

"Progress to Vantage achieves its aim to bridge the gap between Cambridge BEC (Business English Certificate) Preliminary and Vantage levels. This book would be appropriate for all learners of general business English and not only those intending to take the BEC examination. The book has the up-to-date feel essential for face validity with business English learners." Recommended.

"If you have students who have passed the BEC Preliminary exam but are not yet quite ready for the Vantage syllabus or if you have intermediate level students who will benefit from a systematic grammar-based approach to Business English, Progress to Vantage could be the book you are looking for."
English Teaching Matters
"An enjoyable intermediate business English course, which paves the way for students to reach the BEC Vantage level. I particularly liked the fact that mainly authentic material is used. This course would primarily be suitable for students wishing to tackle the BEC Vantage exam, but also for those whose main goal is to reach an intermediate business English level. Comprehensive, and enjoyable, sure to score high with students and teachers alike."
"Some interesting real world problems: how to manage cash flow, business entertainment choices for different types of guest, self-appraisal, and claiming business expenses. The centre pages offer advice on taking the different papers in the exam. This is a course which progressively leads to the exam, but it is also interested in the more general language and skills development of its users in a business context which must be recognizable, and therefore credible for many."

"A truly comprehensive set of preparation materials. Together with the accompanying audio CD' the Student’s Book systematically prepares for all four sections of the exam. All in all, the book makes a clean, up-to-date impression, combining realistic texts and dialogues with targeted practice. Teachers will welcome the user-friendly format and the frequent opportunities for revision and consolidation work. The Teacher’s Book…contains comprehensive lesson notes, clearly setting out the objectives of each lesson as well as providing answer key, unit-by-unit tapescripts…and an overview of the key vocabulary in each unit. There is also an excellent Workbook…This is a language-focused supplement to the Student’s Book. Each four-page unit contains both a grammar and a vocabulary section and the progress of the Workbook follows that of the Student’s Book, providing further revision and additional extension to the main syllabus. Like the rest of the series, the Workbook is clearly laid-out, well presented and easy to use. Taken as a whole, the series provides an excellent package of preparation materials for this increasingly popular and now widely-recognised Business English examination."
"Summertown Publishing has proved to be THE expert in preparing students for the BEC Higher exam. My students immediately felt at home with "Pass Cambridge BEC Higher" mainly because they found the graphics to be user-friendly and the units presented in digestible sizes. The unit topics cover every aspect of business generally and pertain specifically to all aspects that could be encountered in the exam itself. Particular appreciation was given to the Self-Study pages, together with Exam Practice, both sections to be found at the end of each complete unit. The listening CD was considered to be of very clear quality, if at times spoken reasonably quickly.
We have been able to methodically work through the book and supplementary material has therefore not proved to be necessary which, in itself, is a great time-saver for the teacher. The writing tasks are varied and challenging and the optional tasks particularly are of great value as they bring the student into direct contact with the real world. Highly recommendable to any teacher preparing students for this challenging exam."

"Writing Skills, although part of a business series, can easily be used with a general English class or by individual learners. Any learner who needs to write business letters, reports, faxes, and email messages will find a lot of useful suggestions.
The instructions and explanations are clear, the language easy to understand and the structure and cross-referencing make for easy navigation. It’s visually attractive too.
…a very good example itself of cohesive, clear and well-structured writing for an intermediate learner of English."

“This handy little book in the Business Skills Series from Summertown Publishing provides a quick reference and self-study work for anyone who has to give presentations in English.
Each section is clearly laid out, offering solid advice on how to structure a talk, define and achieve objectives, get the message across and make better use of visual aids.
Whilst not in the strictest sense a course book or a language teaching book, many teachers, especially those faced with teaching “English for Presentations" for the first time, will find it a valuable source of ideas. You can also recommend it to your more able students for self-study."
"An excellent initiative. Extremely well designed...has a clean, simple, colourful and original look. I and other technical duffers will learn a lot but experienced internet users will also find the references, teaching ideas, and sources of material very useful too."

"30 solid lessons provoke ideas and are easily adapatable ot cater for the changing nature of websites. There is plenty to dip into here and for anyone teaching at the more specialist end of the business English spectrum it is a godsend. If you don't teach business English, don't be put off. It is by far the most useful book on the topic of the internet and ELT that I have surfed, browsed and bookmarked to date."

"Consistent approach to the presentation and practice of the language... the learning tasks are straightforward with clear instructions.. the vocabulary is rich and encourages students to learn collocations. Technical English is not only an extremely professional textbook in its own right. It should also be a source of inspiration for teachers wishing to develop further materials to meet the particular needs of their specialist learners. Excellent new resource book which will appeal to a wide range of specialist learners. The book is ideal too for teachers and students who need a practical overview of technical English." Besig Business Issues
"Clearly written and well-designed, witha good balance between text and photographs...An attractive guide for any Business English teaching centre's resources shelf. A companion website provides extra material and downloadable PDFs of some of the material in the book. All in all, a very welcome resource book."
IATEFL CALL Review, Journal of the Computer SIG
"Overall, I was very impressed with this book and felt a variety of users would find help with it. It would be a wise investment for staffrooms filled with general purpose English teaching, but obviously it will provide much more depth for its intended audience of teachers dealing with business matters."

"The first handbook good enough to get business English teachers online. …the first to go beyond generalities and apply use of the web to a specific and expanding area of ELT. An impressive book that would be a valuable addition to the staffroom bookshelf for business English teachers of all levels... - and also for ELT generalists."

"An excellent and enjoyable resource - I'll bet it wouldn't take most people more than 3 minutes to find something in it they could use tomorrow in class."
"Technical English stands out as a model for how these complex, multi-content, essential learning tools can be put together. The typography is clear and tidy, the colour tints are carefully chosen and the whole book shows exemplary attention to detail. Beyond pre-press, the materials are of high quality and the repro and presswork of a similar, high standard. As a supplementary book, Technical English is user-friendly with clear indexing. Relevant and clear illustrations along with an authentic final task in every unit ensure this book is set apart from your average workbook...sits well on your resource shelf."
English Teaching Professional
“This is a technical English book with a difference. Instead of trying to teach the technical it concentrates on the language of the technical. It aims to develop the vocabulary and grammar required to communicate technical English from intermediate level.
The layout is simple. Each unit is a double page spread with the language clearly presented on the left-hand page and the exercise on the right…It is useful as a practice book and as a reference work, for both self study and classroom use."

"Congratulations to the publisher of Summertown for taking the decision to produce a book that comes complete with everything the student needs all in one."
Andy Hewistson, Head of Teacher Training, Siemens, Germany
"The lexis, presented in a wide variety of business and interpersonal communication activities, has an authentic feel to it. Double Dealing comes complete with everything the student needs all in one: grammar reference and practice, audio scripts, key vocabulary lists for each unit and a self-study section with plenty of additional homework exercises." Andy Hewitson, Head of English Training, Siemens Learning Campus
"With this book we finally have something really different on the market. I have been waiting so long to bring life and humor to my business classes and this book will definitely help me in doing so. I especially find it useful to the businessmen who cannot dedicate too much time to studying at home and who easily get confused with too much material. Here they get everything all in one book. I particularly like the review after each lesson and such interesting and amusing conversation topics. It is one of the rare business course books that is really worth teaching from beginning to end." Bojana Kovacevic, EFL teacher, Lugano, Switzerland
"Double Dealing has a refreshingly original take on the world of business by daring to suggest that not everything is quite what it seems out there; it is built around an ongoing simulation in the world of hotels where you can’t actually trust everyone on your side. Yet along the way, it deals fully with most of the areas you’d expect a book at B1 level to tackle, and is particularly strong in the areas of register, collocations, lexical phrases and intercultural communication. The situations are lively and credible, and there’s plenty of practice and grammar detail in the huge back-of-the-book sections. Though it has a hefty self-study section, I think it would work well with groups and would be especially ideal for courses at a school for future workers in the tourist / hotel industries, or anyone having to cope with a range of managerial situations. It’s a kind of Maltese Towers". Brian Brennan, Language Training Manager, International House Company Training, Barcelona, Spain
"The student book looks really good; interesting and well structured. I like the lay out, and that the different parts are clearly defined. I am sure a lot of students will greatly appreciate the book's clarity, and the personal data bank is really brilliant. The grammar reference with practice and the self-study parts are very useful for students to reinforce what they have learned in class. All in all, I find it refreshingly different to most business books around." Sue Nikles, EFL Teacher, Flumenthal, Switzerland
"Among the highlights of the new material are the self-study units. The audio includes non-native speakers and the cross-cultural focus provides useful and interesting activities. There is also a grammar section. The visual quality of the material is as good as ever." Pete Sharma, EL Gazette
"Double Dealing is an innovative business English book." Julia Pearson, Maltese Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language
"Double Dealing is certainly a tool to help students learning business English and has all the ingredients of a bestseller." John Overton, TESOL France
"The unique selling proposition of Double Dealing is the story-line; the different settings provide welcome opportunities for intercultural observation, and the personal data bank in every unit is a useful encouragement towards greater learner autonomy. I feel that Summertown Publishing deserves a special mention for the way they have visually branded a whole series of new books, and created a good-looking template at the same time."

"Definitely not bland and definitely not boring, James Schofield's Double Dealing really breaks the mould of what has become a very standardised format of teaching English for business course books, as even its title suggests. This book contains all the usual language functions, but being placed within the context of a gripping story line, means learning them can be far more motivating and memorable. ...An exciting story line...extremely good value for money too...much more accessible and user friendly than many other English for business books...extremely well organised...equally well designed...all the language points are presented in an extremely pragmatic way. "Double Dealing is a book with a difference: it has a storyline. An auditor investigates the mysterious circumstances of a commercial project manager's death, and her investigations lead her to take part in meetings, write e-mails, negotiate and make presentations, thus cleverly providing the context for the book content. The vocabulary is highly appropriate for intermediate business English learners. The standard of graphics and photography and layout are as high as we have come to expect from this niche publisher. Brave and innovative, this book is worth investigation."

"Meaningful content: What I particularly like about English for Business Life is that it teaches the language of communication in the form of stock phrases and expressions. Ian Badger and Pete Menzies demonstrate an understanding of the needs of students learning English for their work and of their trainers. Each unit deals with a discrete communicative situation, introducing a set of expressions at the beginning and leading to a practical application at the end. The self-study book is a gem and can serve as a stand-alone course. Each unit begins with what students so often ask: a recording and a list of the expressions to read, listen and repeat. Study notes consolidate the lesson and help the student working alone. This is particularly useful for a student who misses a class. The exercises can be used as supplementary material or homework. English for Business Life is an innovative approach to teaching English for professional communication. “This self-study book offers a no-nonsense method for improving grammar and vocabulary. Each of the 36 units covers a different business area, such as arranging meetings, describing products or talking about the company. First, you listen to phrases – spoken quickly but clearly by native speakers – on the CD that comes with the book. Then you practise the phrases and do further grammar, vocabulary and listening exercises. Each two-page unit can be completed rapidly, making this an ideal book for pre-intermediate learners (A2-B1) who prefer short study sessions.” Business Spotlight

Units are short, the information presented is sufficient and the layout is reader-friendly. "I wasn't disappointed by these materials, which assume a high basic intelligence level while keeping things simple enough for the English learner who hasn't much formal English background. It is the Self-study Guide which really sold me. It is written in a straightforward yet friendly manner, and feels a bit like being taught by a knowledgeable friend. The learner has the feeling of really being guided through the lessons and supported via a very conversational approach. I was also impressed with how much basic English the authors managed to work in within the context of teaching you what to say in business situations. It is less like being 'taught grammar' and more like a colleague sharing tips, which I think will be well received by business executive types who need to study, but don't want to feel like they have 'gone back to the schoolroom.' The listenings are another strong point." www.tefl.net

The material is consistently high quality and it meets the needs - changed or unchanged - of today's teachers and learners. BESIG Newsletter
“Writers Ian Badger and Pete Menzies really have gone to town to provide us with a course book which hits the heart of learner needs. For my money, “Business English” is about the closest you’re likely to get to simulate the ups and downs of the business world within the pages of a course book.” MELTA News
“…provides an attractive, mature & professional approach. English for Business Life is a very welcome series to the business English market & one that will be popular with both the business student & the teacher.” www.developingteachers.com
“Each book unit is related to a clearly defined and presented theme and covers everyday business communications skills. Units are short, the information presented is sufficient and the layout is reader-friendly. Each unit includes a very useful summary of lexical and grammar items presented under the heading ‘Language Notes’. Language summaries are also found at the end of each course book. The glossary item of business-related terms is valuable for learners who are always interested in familiarising themselves with the English version of terms that they frequently use in their mother tongue on a regular basis…” TESOL Greece Newsletter
"…in many respects Business Life is a winner…Each unit of the book is defined in terms of the expressions students will learn to use and the situations that these expressions will prepare them to deal with. An interesting feature is the inclusion of explicit preparation points for the students to act on before working on a given unit…for your pre-ints it may be just what the doctor ordered!" English Teaching Matters, Germany
"It is packed with practical, informative readings, a variety of activities... engaging listenings and exceptionally good practice tests for essay writing."
"These are the first books I have come across where there is a special focus on writing SMS text messages, on buying goods on-line, on distinguishing different genres, etc. There is a lot of educational potential in these books as well. The information about the Great Pyramid, the Titanic, Thomas More, the Roman Army, etc. helped not only to brush up grammar but also to enrich and broaden my students' outlook. Some extra data about life in Great Britain, samples of surveys, library rules and diagrams gave us a closer look at your culture and mentality.
To sum up, I'd like to recommend these books to all teachers who would like to make their lessons more productive and compelling, and to help their students be more enthusiastic and eager to learn English in and out of the classroom." Tefl.net
Just Listening & Speaking: "...clear, practical and interesting...attractively illustrated and the tapes are clear...a variety of voices and accents which are always easily understandable...interesting range of topics, from news and commercials through authentic interviews to a murder mystery. The self-study speaking is a first in my experience. All in all, it would be a practical addition to your bookshelf."
Just Vocabulary: "As the layout is modern and clearly arranged, you can use it for students, professionals and even teenagers...I like the book and can recommend it to all of you who want to spice up the vocabulary of your students with some interesting, intelligent, exceptional or remarkable words."
Just Reading & Writing: "...the layout is very easy to use, in basic colour, with an answer key at the back. Its approach is very learner-centred, each unit working through 3 different styles of text, all with a variety of tasks to work through." ETAS Journal, Switzerland
"In brief, this 'Just' series is very useful in an ESOL learning environment where differentiation is important. I like the fact that there is separate material for specific skills which lends itself to being used to support students with individual needs both on individual and group basis." Natecla News
"The book is well designed, the graphics are attractive and there is a variety of practice exercise types...has tremendous potential. I can imagine lots of discussions with students simulating role-plays similar to those on the tracks." Just Listening & Speaking Intermediate Book Review featured in ELTAF Newsletter
"I really would like to use these four books as they give you the freedom to pick & choose, catering to needs & interests, with the bits that you don't cover being completed as self study...a learner-centred approach. As self-study materials, they are self explanatory & learner friendly...ideal to recommend when using a lopsided coursebook or a student asking you for supplementary material. These books would be ideal when working with 1-1 classes & it would also appeal to the more mature class such as the corporate-based class. To sum up, this is certainly one of the ways forward in the provision of course materials. Definitely worth checking out." http://developingteachers.com
"...a bold attempt at integration, offering materials which not only complement each other but also may be used in class or for self-study purposes. The Vocabulary book follows a clear lexical syllabus...Particularly impressive are the exercises which ask the learner to choose and manipulate vocabulary, based on the knowledge that new items take time to learn. Grammar is explained clearly...The language of explanation is carefully graded. The Reading and Writing book concentrates on contemporary language, including texts and tasks based on email, internet and text messages...There are excellent links to the vocabulary book, particularly where learners are encouraged to read and use language in chunks. The listening texts are authentic or semi-authentic, not too long and include some new language. The speaking tasks are varied, and carefully designed so that learners receive appropriate input before producing language and to avoid demotivating performances. An excellent set in all respects and highly recommended." IATEFL Issues
"The Just series ...very economical... Just Reading and Writing...good exam preparation material. Just Vocabulary...This is an excellent book for increasing word power. Just Listening and Speaking...20 listening units each with a double page spread and 10 speaking exercises. Some involve speaking with the recording while others suggest recording the student telling a story or making a speech, etc. and then comparing with a model example. Just Grammar...this is unashamedly pure grammar - basic, useful, succinct, intermediate level without oversimplification or the fancy bits. The Just series is a must for all teachers...It is flexible and once you find your way around it you can adapt your course to suit the students, whatever next week holds in store." English Teaching Matters
"The Just Series by Jeremy Harmer is an upbeat collection in four volumes...topics are contemporary...The texts and activities are culturally sensitive, which would make these books ideal for learners in the Gulf region. The quirky artwork, clarity of instructions and original use of text types also add to its appeal. Final verdict The activities are attractively presented with good use of colour text boxes and photographs. This, combined with the varied and interesting texts, will do much to encourage learners to study independently. Whether you are looking for an easy-to-use addition to a self-access centre, a set of fresh course books, or supplementary materials to motivate your students, the Just series could be Just what you need." "The Just Series by Jeremy Harmer is an upbeat collection in four volumes...topics are contemporary...The texts and activities are culturally sensitive, which would make these books ideal for learners in the Gulf region. The quirky artwork, clarity of instructions and original use of text types also add to its appeal. Final verdict The activities are attractively presented with good use of colour text boxes and photographs. This, combined with the varied and interesting texts, will do much to encourage learners to study independently. Whether you are looking for an easy-to-use addition to a self-access centre, a set of fresh course books, or supplementary materials to motivate your students, the Just series could be Just what you need." "These are the first books I have come across where there is a special focus on writing SMS text messages, on buying goods on-line, on distinguishing different genres, etc.
"In brief, this 'Just' series is very useful in an ESOL learning environment where differentiation is important. I like the fact that there is separate material for specific skills which lends itself to being used to support students with individual needs both on individual and group basis." Natecla News
